Local Partners

The Danau Girang Field Centre is a collaborative research and training facility owned by the Sabah Wildlife Department and co-managed with Cardiff University.

It is situated in Lot 6 of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in Sabah, Malaysia and is surrounded by a mixture of forest, ranging from primary forest to disturbed areas.  These include villages, small scale agriculture and palm oil plantations.  It is an ideal location to study wildlife and the effects of humans on biodiversity.

DGFC will coordinate biological monitoring in the reforestation plots in the Kinabatangan. Amaziasizamoria (Maz) Jumail, Research Officer at DGFC, is the Regrow Borneo project manager and responsible for carbon and biological monitoring in the reforestation plots.

The planting work is both planned in conjunction with, and executed by, the KOPEL Community Ecotourism Co-operative of the Batu Puteh Community.  This community represents four local villages and works to support sustainable alternative livelihoods for local people, the conservation of forests and biodiversity, as well as supporting the skills development and training needs of the local community.

KOPEL offers 20+ year of experience, in developing nurseries, identifying appropriate species, and in reforestation in the area.
